The Targets – Wake Up

Cheshire three-piece The Targets release their debut single Wake Up on November 22nd on CD and download via Project Records. The single comes off the back of extensive UK and overseas touring, and features a Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Pixies) remix. The track’s massive, über-catchy chorus pays immediate homage to the likes of 70s punk pioneers The Buzzcocks and The Jam. But there is a contemporary message behind the mayhem too – which has prompted some to dub The Targets’ uncompromising style as ‘iMod for the 21st century’ .

The band – Conrad (guitar), Jess (drums) and bassist Sam (who played George Harrison in the acclaimed John Lennon biopic movie Nowhere Boy) – have been together since they were 13 years old, shouting their brand of loud, angst-driven guitar rock from the rafters of any teenage lad’s headspace.

A video for Wake Up (also starring Jay Johnson from the Nowhere Boy cast) is below, and reflects The Targets’ earliest days when they were too young to perform in pubs or clubs and so had to cut their teeth and build their following playing private house parties.

The band everyone is talking about have been busy polishing their artillery, and are back with the follow up to their well received debut single ‘The Book Stops Here’. ‘Echoes‘ is a throbbing piece of indie-pop brilliance (and incidentally was one of the demo tracks which helped forge a name for the band in their early days).

The Valentines – A Girl Like You

Taken from their forthcoming EP ‘Dally’, indie-popsters The Valentines are set to win hearts and minds with their second single, the double A-sided ‘A Girl Like You’ and ‘Dont’ Dally Sally’. With comparisons already drawn with Aussie pop-rockers Crowded House, their ‘homemade cooking’ sound is about to surprise and refresh in equal measure. A soothing down-tempo modern pop ballad from Ben Heyworth (This Morning Call) brilliantly fuses together electronic and classical musical instruments. With an award winning video and the brilliantly received remix by dance outfit Bitrocka, the single is impossible to listen to just once.

Shmoo – Waves

The fourth single from the much lauded live electronica outfit Shmoo is Waves. Having supported such musical heavyweights as Roni Size, Roisin Murphy, Ladyhawk and fellow Mancunians Delphic, Shmoo made a massive impact with their live shows during Manchester International Festival last summer. ALready well known in their hometown, the brothers at the heart of Shmoo are setting their sights further afield. Waves is a throbbing slice of electro-pop, set to thrill chin-stroking electronica connoisseurs and the party-seeking indie kids alike.

As with all previous releases, the single comes with a short film made by David and Neil Newport in collaboration with director Ash Tidball.

 

Nigel of Bermondsey – Lonely Heart Attack

Lonely Heart Attack is the first single to be taken from the new Nigel of Bermondsey album ‘London Dreamtime’. According to Nigel, the song was written when he was in an extremely bad mood… ‘it’s about breaking up and not making up and how you fantasise that you will be missed although you probably won’t be…’

The haunting B-side ‘You Are my Avatar’ (which you can hear on our SoundCloud page) evokes memories of the late, great Elliott Smith. This single will be available for digital download (from iTunes) from 12th July.

Nigel (Woolf-Hoyle) started his musical career as the bass player in Indie/Glam group Gay Dad in the late 20th century. After the band’s demise, Nigel dedicated himself to his own songwriting career; Nigel of Bermondsey was born, and his debut, self-titled album was released in 2008 to great acclaim. London Dreamtime, his second album, recorded in a small room just off the Walworth Road over a three month period in 2009.

Blind Atlas – Take a While/Best Day of My Life

Blind Atlas concoct a boozy stew of American alt-country with a classic northern English edge; taking inspiration from Tom Waits to Morrissey to map their trademark soulful melancholia and defining the territory where Americana meets Mancunia… Grizzled vocals and a heart-wrenching lyric sheet… think Ryan Adams fronting The Black Keys, or perhaps Fleet Foxes with a Led Zeppelin fixation; and clearly all designed to soundtrack long, whisky-addled nights of anguished soul-searching. ‘Take a While’ and ‘Best Day of My Life’ were recorded and produced by Christian and Nicky Madden of The Earlies.

Max Raptor – The Great and the Good

‘The Great And The Good’ is the debut single from Midlands based 4 piece Max Raptor. Produced by Sam Bell, whose credits include Bloc Party, Editors and REM, it’s a choice cut of ballsy modern guitar music, that reeks of the most pungent post-gig sweaty tee. You can see the Max Raptor at this years Download festival, with further Live/festival dates to be announced soon.

My Albatross – Rich Man’s Daughter

After garnering rave reviews from the likes of Radio 1, Radio 2, 6Music and Xfm, My Albatross retreated into the studio to polish their artillery and work on their follow-up single. The time is now right, and after redoubling their efforts to become a major name on the uk alt-rock scene, their second single, Rich Man’s Daughter,  arms the boys with everything they’ll need to take on the music industry (and probably the world too). Glasgow born Dave takes lead vocals again in this punchy 2 minute affair.

The other track ‘I Don’t Love You’, has Sam lending his haunting vocal, which could compare to the fragility of Anthony Hegarty from Anthony and The Johnsons. Check out the recently surfaced ‘unofficial video’, which I’m sure you’ll agree hits just the right note!
