Yé-yé pop revivalist Aimée Steven releases her debut single ‘My Name’

With the swagger of Serge Gainsbourg and the wit of Nico, Aimée Steven is giving 60s psychedelia and yé-yé pop the revival it deserves.

Her debut single My Name sees her going against the tide of twee indie with a more rugged sound, earning her comparisons to The Velvet Underground.

A self-confessed Francophile raised on Bowie and Birkin, the singer, songwriter and guitarist muses on the banality of modern life and modern love.

Visceral lyrics and a sophisticated singing voice are two trademarks of Steven’s music, but it’s her custom powder blue Gordon Smith GS1 guitar that makes her sound so unique.

Reflecting on her early influences, which range from the Bee Gees to Roy Orbison, Steven confesses she was a late bloomer: “I didn’t see an instrument until I was about 15.”

It was years later, during a university exchange in Barcelona, that she began to discover her sound, after picking up a guitar and tapping into the city’s rich psychedelic scene.

Steven left university prematurely; nevertheless, music was never far away.

“Music remained the one constant comfort in my life, so I decided – after much deliberation – that I wanted to start blogging and interviewing musicians at home in the UK,” she explains.

That has since culminated in a music career the beginnings of her debut album, which will follow My Name this year, as well as plays on BBC Merseyside and 6Music.

Speaking about the track and her future plans, she adds: “I can feel my confidence and my musical confidence growing – It’s time to write my next chapter.”

Fans of Lily Allen, Blondie, Jane Birkin and everyone mentioned above take note. Aimée Steven is making her way in the world with her original brand of ‘red beret pop’.

Her debut live show with her band was at Liverpool Sound City and created lots of interest. You can catch Aimée at Barn on the Farm, Liverpool International Music Festival and Kendal Calling this summer.

MDNGHT SET TO RELEASE PRISTINE LATE-SUMMER SINGLE “BREEZE”

MDNGHT_May_2014

ASKME -singles-button-small

IMPACT DATE: TBC
LABEL: MUK Records

MDNGHT‘s star keeps rising at a dizzy pace. Having played to an excited crowd at Radio 1′s Big Weekend – getting them to their feet and partying to their new single Breeze – enthusiastic support then followed from both TIME magazine and The Guardian.

Breeze is MDNGHT at their lithe best, melding contemporary dance and shimmering house with a glossy, sweet falsetto: encapsulating the euphoria of a late-summer sunset party – making this single a perfect post-holiday soundtrack.

Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens was won over by their performance, recognising MDNGHT’s dancefloor potential: “This’ll get the whole place bouncing… sounding wonderful!”

And TIME magazine, who premiered the video, enthusiastically noted Breeze’s, “flecks of guitar, piano stabs and wall-of-sound background vocals gathering around Jordan Lewin’s breathy falsetto,” confirming that the USA is just as receptive to MDNGHT’s “drifty, tropical dance music.”

Meanwhile, The Guardian – covering MDNGHT for the third time – praised Breeze‘s joyous pop appeal: “the uplifting chorus… is a brilliant way of making you fling your hands in the air.”

It’s the perfect follow-up to previous single, Into The Night, which hit the UK Club Chart top ten and was BBC Introducing Single of the Week on both Radio 1 & 1Xtra.

MDNGHT have been played all across BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra: Fearne Cotton, Greg James, Scott Mills, Huw Stephens, Gemma Cairney, DJ Target, Sarah Jane Crawford, MistaJam, Trevor Nelson, Dev, Yasmin Evans, Twin B, and Adele Roberts.

Sultry, warm and addictive: this is a song that harnesses warm grooves, house beats and a bright, sunny hook – and MDNGHT will be winning over more new fans via a series of UK-wide late-summer gigs.

Time Out praised MDNGHT’s “obvious chart ambition” and loved their “dreamy, funky house-pop” so much they made their 8th August gig at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen their East London gig of the week.

MDNGHT are: J (vocals), Will and Ant (guitars) and Lloyd (DJ and percussion). They signed an album deal with Manchester-based MUK Records in late 2012.

Following the wide praise of their debut single Josef, which grabbed the attention of the Huffington Post, the Daily Mirror, Yahoo OMG, and Digital Spy, BERLIN BERLIN return with another sky-scraping single, Be Here.

A glorious paean to faith, devotion and love, Be Here is another huge indicator of the band’s ability to write stadium-sized, heartfelt pop – and shows why the band were quickly invited by Google to shoot a video session in London for the internet giants.

The video from the session will be published on the week of the single’s release.

Be Here is backed by a transformative, shimmering rework of Furniture‘s 1986 classic Brilliant Mind. It’s simply a must-listen, and the band performed it live in the BBC Introducing Manchester studio for 6 Music’s Elizabeth Alker, who said it sounded “spectacular.

BERLIN BERLIN’s mantra is ‘dark beauty on epic scale’, and their sound is immediate, vast and driven, combining brooding 80s/90s electronica with contemporary rhythms – to fashion something truly vast, life-affirming and euphoric.

“Are these the new Killers?” – The Huffington Post
“Gritty, electro-infused rock that invokes moody New Wave influences” Idolator
“Stadium-rousing electronica” – Digital Spy

BIRD TO BEAST RELEASE NEW SINGLE, “CATACOMBS” & GETS FIRST PLAY ON RADCLIFFE & MACONIE’S BBC 6 MUSIC SHOW

SINGLE – Catacombs
IMPACT DATE –  June 2014
LABEL – MUK Records

Q: What links The Hollies’ Bobby Elliot and Bird to Beast’s Sam and Hannah Hird?
A: Bird to Beast‘s new single, Catacombs – and the Lancashire mill-town of Colne…

After a breakthrough start to 2014, Bird To Beast deliver another wonderfully infectious song, Catacombs. And it marks them as songwriters of real note, showcasing an ear for the enticingly odd and attractively dreamy.

Catacombs is not only Bird To Beast’s most lovely and touching single yet, but it also features shuffling percussion from Hollies drummer Bobby Elliott.

The song got its first radio play on Radcliffe and Maconie‘s BBC 6 Music show – with Mark enthusing about the song – and was particularly impressed that Bobby was playing on the track.

Bobby lives in the same Lancashire town of Colne as Sam and Hannah, and after meeting the band – and being wooed by their inventive sound – got involved.

Catacombs is a fabulous single, drawing listeners in with sweetly cooing vocals on love and life, and a coiling, surprising melody, mixing a gorgeous lullaby with rumbustious excitement.

The single is backed with live favourite Posture and Pantomime as a B-side.

Its release follows a whirlwind few months for Bird To Beast, seeing them gaining wonderful UK radio support – including Steve Lamacq, Marc Riley, Chris Hawkins, Radcliffe & Maconie, Alex Lester, Tom Robinson, Michelle Hussey, Ruth Barnes, Sean McGinty, Emma Mac and Shell Zenners shows – as well as playing a bunch of well-received gigs, and will be gracing a whole array of festival stages in the coming months.
