Polymath DJ Jon Kennedy is no stranger to taking good songs and re-shaping them entirely – it’s a talent that made Mr. Scruff sit up and take notice – and his re-work of Kate Rogers‘ Good Fortune is a fabulous, novel and deep interpretation.
It’s a glossy, tropical and spacious re-edit that allows Kate’s deluxe vocals skip sweetly on the surface and then soar. There’s a hint of Andrew Weatherall in the punchy, deep bass, and huge, widescreen, shimmering finale.
Kate Rogers is nomadic – musically and personally – and her music soars beautifully as a result.
She’s blessed with a genuinely gorgeous voice, a cluster of fabulously diverse, pin-sharp songs and an ability to view the world from a degree or two off-kilter.
Anger Management – a huge radio hit in her native Canada – is her new UK release, and will capture as many hearts here with its contrasting icy observations and tender warmth.
Kate and her music are naggingly familiar and yet refreshingly unclassifiable. After a bunch of fruitful musical collaborations, she’s releasing the wonderful Repeat Repeat – her most impressively innovative album to date.
Produced by Toronto’s Chris Stringer (Timber Timbre, Ohbijou, Snowblink),Repeat Repeat lays bare the vast scope of emotions Kate has grown so adept at exposing to her audience.
Born in the middle of nowhere in Canada, Kate somewhat unexpectedly discovered success in the UK after lending her voice to Mark Rae’s Manchester-based Rae and Christian project and was signed to the prestigious Grand Central label.
She draws on a kaleidoscopic array of musical influences, from the obvious (Tegan and Sara, Wilco, Modest Mouse and Gillian Welch) to the surprising (Slayer and Iron Maiden!)
